Suitcase with Woman's Skull and Bones Found off Atlanta Interstate
Atlanta area police are now researching missing persons cases and seeking the public's help in figuring out how a suitcase full of human bones ended up off a busy interstate.
Authorities were first alerted to the suitcase Friday morning, after a contractor working with the state's Department of Transportation, along I-985, walked about 80 yards into the woods and discovered a suitcase with an "entire set of bones," including a skull, Gwinnett County police said in a news release.
The case is being investigated as a homicide, police Sgt. Rich Long tells PEOPLE.
The county medical examiner determined the bones belonged to a woman between 20 and 30, possibly mixed race or Hispanic, who died about six months ago, he says.
The ME's office is still investigating the cause of death, Long says.

The suitcase appeared to have been in the woods "for an extended period of time" before its discovery, Gwinnett police said in their release.
Though no missing persons cases in the county match the bones, Long says police are continuing to research possible connections and are reaching out to neighboring agencies, according to the release.
