How Does Facebook Make Money?

How Does Facebook Make Money?
Despite having over two billion users on its platform, Facebook doesn't actually make any money on content or directly through its user base.

Instead, it makes billions via digital advertising, as Facebook has something that companies really want - access to billions of people around the globe who might buy their products or services. In fact, so many companies advertise on Facebook that in 2017, Facebook earned $39.9 billion from advertising revenue. All in all, the company earns about 85% of its money from advertising.

What forms of advertising does Facebook use to make its money? Here's a list:

1. Self-Serve Advertising
This type of advertising is widely used on Facebook - self-serve advertising enables anyone to create and put up an ad on Facebook. Self-serve advertisements appear on the right side (or "sidebar") on Facebook pages, for individuals, groups, user profiles, events, and third-party pages. Facebook's Ad Manager page helps advertisers create their own ads, offering granular target tools to ensure the ad reaches the intended audience.

2. Targeted Advertisements
Facebook holds a massive amount of personal data on its user base, including gender, age, hobbies, career choices, political preferences, shopping preferences - even their favorite baseball team. That allows Facebook to sell advertising space to companies and organizations who want to hone in on a specific demographic, like video game players or Range Rover owners. Or, more generically, advertisers can target ads to larger groups of people based on political preferences, religion, or even age. Advertisers can use specific tools like Facebook's Dynamic Ads to market their entire inventory of products to users at different income levels, to up their chances of making a sale. Targeted ads are a significant revenue generator for Facebook, and it's all due to the data the company collects on its user base.

How does Whatsapp make money?

How does Whatsapp make money?

WhatsApp pricing?
When WhatsApp first started, they used to charge a $1 a year subscription (sometimes offering the first year for free).

However since 2016, WhatsApp has been completely free for everyone. (Similar to Discord)

As of 2018, WhatsApp makes very little money compared their user base, as the service remains free and free of ads. (In 2014, Facebook reported that WhatsApp made approximately $1.2M on subscriptions)

Following Facebook’s acquisition, it doesn’t seem like they have a big need to make money soon.

WhatsApp Future Revenue Plans
Facebook motive behind the acquisition of WhatsApp is clear: they are going to gather more and more data from you such as conversation patterns, behavioral information, live location, your entire contact list, and more (yikes).

This data can in turn be used by Facebook to provide even better targeted advertising.

(Let’s just hope they don’t get into another Cambridge Analytica scandal.)

How Does Uber Make Money?

Uber and other ridesharing companies make money by taking a share of every trip charged through their phone apps. Uber keeps 25% of each fare booked through its app, while its rival Lyft takes 20%.

Uber sets different rates for every city. The fares vary according to the immediate demand for rides and the user's choice of vehicle and service.

How Uber's Pricing Works
Uber relies on a surge pricing strategy that increases rates during times of peak demand. That draws more drivers to take to the roads to claim fares. Once peak demand is met, the fares gradually decrease.

In New York City, the Uber estimator quotes prices ranging from about $39 to about $60 from Times Square to Laguardia International Airport. The city recently passed a law requiring ride-sharing services to pay its drivers a minimum of $17.86 an hour.

The Uber app collects the fare by credit card before the driver arrives, and collects an optional tip for the driver afterward.

What is Bitcoin?

What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin, often described as a cryptocurrency, a virtual currency or a digital currency - is a type of money that is completely virtual.

It's like an online version of cash. You can use it to buy products and services, but not many shops accept Bitcoin yet and some countries have banned it altogether.

The physical Bitcoins you see in photos are a novelty. They would be worthless without the private codes printed inside them.

Each Bitcoin is basically a computer file which is stored in a 'digital wallet' app on a smartphone or computer.

People can send Bitcoins (or part of one) to your digital wallet, and you can send Bitcoins to other people.

Every single transaction is recorded in a public list called the blockchain.

This makes it possible to trace the history of Bitcoins to stop people from spending coins they do not own, making copies or undo-ing transactions.

Conor McGregor Under Investigation Over Sexual Assault Accusation in Ireland

Conor McGregor, the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s biggest star and one of the world’s highest-paid athletes, is under investigation in Ireland after a woman accused him of sexual assault in December, according to four people familiar with the investigation.

McGregor has not been charged with a crime. Following the usual protocol in criminal investigations in Ireland and much of Europe, where a formal charge does not necessarily follow an arrest, McGregor was arrested in January, questioned by law enforcement authorities and released pending further investigation, according to the people.

The allegations have not been proved, and the fact that an investigation is continuing does not imply that McGregor is guilty of a crime. A lawyer for McGregor in Dublin did not respond to messages seeking comment.

Investigators haven't immediately noticed anything suspicious about the huge, wind-whipped blaze that devastated the factory building in Elmwood Park, New Jersey, that had an iconic sign which served as a beacon for residents in that region of the state.

"There’s nothing at this point to lead us to believe there’s anything suspicious, but that remains to be seen," Elmwood Park Police Chief Michael Foligno said Thursday.

The fire was under control at around 2 a.m. and demolition teams were set to go in to allow firefighters to get in and look for hot spots and eventually clear the way for investigators to look for the cause, Foligno said. The fire is believed to have begun in a warehouse that houses large rolls of paper

Nigerians To Pay For National ID Card From 2022 – NIMC

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) on Thursday said Nigerians will begin to pay for the National Identity Card from year 2022.
The Director General of NIMC, Engr. Aliyu Aziz, disclosed this in Abuja at the Lunch Time Reform Seminar on “The National Digital Identity Ecosystem Strategic Road Map for the Enrollment of Nigerians and Legal Residents into the National Identity Database (NIDB)” organised by the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR).
According to him, the National electronics ID card can only be issued to Nigerians registered into the national identity system and legal residents who have attained the age of 16 years and above.
He however said that the National Identification Number (NIN) is assignable only to Nigerians.
“As a government, we recognise the huge importance of moving towards a Digital Government. Therefore, we must embrace and harness the potentials inherent in digital identity to build and develop our country.
“Nations all over the world and in particular, developed countries have utilized identity as a foundation to transforming governance and enhancing service delivery in the areas of healthcare, agriculture, voting, transportation, financial inclusion, access to basic service and welfare programmes,” he said.
He assured Nigerians that no one shall be denied any government services on account of not having the National Identity Number (NIN).
He said, “Rather, the mandatory enrolment or collection of data by the above-mentioned government agencies or their licensed agents, along with private sector organisations to be licensed by NIMC
under the digital identity ecosystem means fast-tracking of the enrolment process in the national identity system.
“Instead, in its wisdom, the Federal Government approved the new digital identity ecosystem which ensures and mandates all government agencies earlier mentioned and private sector organisations to be licensed by NIMC, to collect citizens’ data using guidelines issued by the NIMC and through secure approved channels of communication send such data to NIMC to generate the NIN.
He urged Nigerians to make use of the remaining three years to get registered and obtained their cards.
In his welcome remarks, the acting Director-General, BPSR, Mr. Dasuki Arabi, represented by the Director, Strategy, Innovation and Research (SIR), Mr. Iyang Anyang, noted that the world was currently facing political, economic, social and technological challenges.
He said the challenges have spurred government institutions to undergo various reforms to cope, address and manage change, for improved performance on quality service delivery to citizens.

Florida man wired $200,000 to Bulgarian 'Cam Girl' before killing family

Grant Amato, 29, was arrested Monday morning and is accused of killing his parents, Chad Amato, 59, and Margaret Amato, 61, and his brother, Cody Amato, 31. They were found dead Friday in their home on Sultan Circle in Chuluota after a coworker reported that Cody Amato hadn't shown up for work.

In the three months beforehand, deputies said Grant Amato stole $200,000 from his parents and brother and wired those funds to a woman in Bulgaria with whom he had been communicating since June on Cam Girls, an adult web site.

Investigators spoke to the suspect's surviving brother who said Grant Amato was speaking with an online call girl and sending her large amounts of money. The brother said the girl knew where the family lived, and that concerned Margret Amato.

Grant Amato told investigators his parents gave him an ultimatum after they learned about the theft: Complete a 60-day internet and sex addiction program or leave the family home. Grant Amato went Dec.22 in Fort Lauderdale to the facility and checked out Jan. 4, according to the arrest warrant.

The suspect entered the treatment facility two days after Chad and Margaret Amato reported Grant Amato missing on Dec. 20 and told Seminole County Sheriff's Office deputies their son was suffering from depression, according to the incident report. The couple told deputies Grant Amato had access to firearms and they were "100 percent convinced he will try to harm himself."

The missing persons report was closed with the Sheriff's Office after deputies spoke with Grant Amato and said their evaluation did not indicate he needed a psychiatric evaluation. He told deputies he just needed a break from his mother and did not intend to harm himself.

When he returned from the south Florida facility to his parents' home in Chuluota, they laid out ground rules and said if he broke any of the rules, he would have to immediately leave the home, Amato told investigators.

One of the guidelines Chad Amato set for his 29-year-old son included no communications with the Bulgarian woman. Grant Amato told investigators this was unfair because she was his girlfriend and he continued to talk to her online. Chad Amato learned about their continued relationship and confronted his son on the night of Jan. 24, telling the suspect to leave the house, according to the arrest report.

The family was found dead the next morning, all suffering from "execution style" wounds, according to the Seminole County Sheriff's Office crime scene analysts.

Investigators said Grant Amato took several steps to try and provide a cover-up story, including writing a fake note from his brother, Cody Amato, that told him to "just please come home."

Cody Amato's girlfriend told investigators that over the past few months, the family had problems with the suspect that included him stealing $60,000 from Cody Amato and his guns. The girlfriend said Grant Amato sold the firearms without his brother's permission.

Cody Amato had previously expressed concern that his brother would kill everyone, his girlfriend told investigators.

A previous arrest report shows Grant Amato was fired from his job at a hospital after he was accused of stealing prescription pills.

Grant Amato was detained for questioning Saturday but was released Sunday. He was arrested hours after his release around 1 a.m. Monday at a Lake Mary hotel.

Amato is charged with three counts of first-degree murder.

This developing story will be updated.

Facebook Denies Half Of Its Users Are Fake Accounts

Fake profiles on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram are pretty common, whether they are used for spam marketing, scams, and so on. However we imagine that most of these platforms probably have a handle on such matters, or do they? That’s what Facebook critic Aaron Greenspan seems to suggest in a report (via Mashable) where he alleges that half of Facebook’s reported monthly active users are actually fake.

According to the report, “The fact of the matter is that Facebook does not now and will not ever have an accurate way to measure its fake account problem. Taking all of these factors into account, we estimate that 50 percent or more of Facebook’s current MAUs are actually fake.” Greenspan and Facebook have a bit of a contentious past over the term “the Face Book”.

This trademark issue was said to have been resolved way back in 2009, but it seems that Greenspan is still not a huge fan of the company. On their end, Facebook has denied Greenspan’s allegations where in a statement issued by the company, “This is unequivocally wrong and responsible reporting means reporting facts, even if it’s about fake accounts.”

Like we said, fake accounts are to be expected of most social networks and online services, but whether or not it is as high as 50% remains to be seen.
