Trump Tells African Leaders His Friends Go There to 'Get Rich.' Awkward Silence Follows

Western exploitation of Africa's resources is a sensitive topic given centuries of bloody colonial history

US. President Donald Trump was met with silence from African leaders Wednesday when he tried to congratulate them for the economic progress the continent has made.

“Africa has tremendous business potential. I’ve so many friends going to your countries, trying to get rich,” Trump told them at a luncheon Wednesday in New York, according to CNBC. “I congratulate you. They’re spending a lot of money,” he said.

Trump reportedly paused for laughter or applause, but none ensued.

The suggestion that wealthy Americans might be trying to enrich themselves in Africa would have been a sensitive one at the event, given that African labor and natural resources were subjected to centuries of European and American exploitation in the colonial era, including during the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

“For American firms it’s really become a place that they have to go — that they want to go,” Trump continued, noting that six of the world’s ten fastest-growing economies are in Africa.

Most U.S. ambassadorships to African nations remain unfilled at this point, CNBC reports, even though all Obama-era appointees were recalled prior to Trump’s inauguration in January. This means that a majority of countries in Africa cannot conduct diplomacy with the U.S. through an ambassador.

Trump also appeared to have referred to Namibia as “Nambia” in his speech, at one point saying that “Nambia’s health system is increasingly self-sufficient.” A transcript of the speech from the White House confirmed that Trump was indeed referring to Namibia.

Turkey arrests 14 lawyers over alleged terrorism links

Turkey has arrested 14 lawyers whom Ankara accuses of having terrorist ties. The case is related to that of two jailed teachers on hunger strike and adds to an unknown number of lawyers now sitting in Turkish prisons.
Turkish authorities have arrested 14 lawyers they said are members of an "armed terrorist organization." The lawyers were among a group of 16 detained last week, although two of those originally detained were later released under judicial control.

The lawyers are accused of having ties to the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party (DHKP-C), a leftist organization that has carried out violent attacks and is staunchly anti-Western. The government has labeled DHKP-C a terrorist group. The daily newspaper Cumhuriyet, which is critical of the government of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, reported that the lawyers were all from a law firm involved in the defense of two jailed teachers currently on hunger strike.

Hurricanes release energy of 10,000 nuclear bombs

FACT OF THE WEEK

Hurricanes release energy of 10,000 nuclear bombs

The Atlantic hurricane season is at its midway point but has already seen some mega-storms. Even average hurricanes release huge amounts of energy. Where does it all come from?

Those who have experienced a hurricane know the devastation one can wreak when mighty winds bear down, flattening homes, ripping up trees and creating huge storm surges. These storms are powerful. In fact, "during its life cycle a hurricane can expend as much energy as 10,000 nuclear bombs," says NASA

At the halfway point, the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season has been defined as "very active" with seven hurricanes. Four of those seven — Harvey, Irma, Jose and Maria — have reached Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson scale. That means they are strong — very strong.

Jose was downgraded to a tropical storm, but the other three followed hot on each other's heels, causing deaths and immense destruction, when they made landfall, through flooding and wind gusts of up to 130 miles per hour (209 kilometers per hour).

Because of their destructive and deadly force, the names Irma, Harvey and Maria will be retired from use, according to Philip Klotzbach, a meteorologist specializing in Atlantic seasonal hurricane forecasts.

But where does all that force come from?

Hurricanes — or tropical cyclones — form over waters where humidity is high, sea surface temperatures are warm (more than 26 degrees Celsius) and light winds prevail. Those conditions usually occur in the summer and early autumn in the tropical North Atlantic and North Pacific.

These cyclones use "warm, moist air as fuel," according to NASA. The air moves up and away from the ocean's surface, causing an area of low air pressure to form. Air from high-pressure areas moves into the low-pressure zone. It warms and rises too.

The cycle continues, and as that warm, moist air rises and cools, the water in it forms clouds. The clouds multiply; the wind whips up and grows, continuing to be fed by the ocean's heat and water. The storm system's rotation speeds up and forms a calm area of low pressure in the center, known as the eye. The strongest winds occur outside of this in the eye wall.

Global warming

Hurricanes generally weaken when they make landfall because they lose their warm water fuel. But scientists believe global warming could increase the frequency and intensity of hurricanes and tropical storms, as ocean water heats up. More warm water equals more fuel.

The most powerful hurricanes usually form in the Gulf and Caribbean, where the water is warm even in the deep sea. The Atlantic's deeper waters are typically cooler. As a hurricane grows and whips up deep, cold water, it loses fuel. This might be changing as the Atlantic heats up. Irma, for instance, had the strongest recorded winds of any hurricane to form in the open Atlantic.

Caribbean islands waits for hurricane

Caribbean islands brace again as storm strengthens to Hurricane Maria

Tropical Storm Maria has developed into a hurricane as the Caribbean's Leeward Islands prepare for impact. It is expected to strengthen and bring dangerous winds, rain and storm surges to other, already damaged islands.

he Caribbean's Leeward Islands braced for another disaster as Tropical Storm Maria developed into a hurricane and is expected to strengthen as it moves towards islands hit by Hurricane Irma less than two weeks ago, the US National Hurricane Center said Sunday.

Forecasters said Maria would likely hit a string of islands on Monday night, including St. Barts, Guadeloupe, Dominica, St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, and Antigua and Barbuda. "Maria is likely to affect the British and US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by mid week as a dangerous major hurricane," the NHC said.

Maria is now a category one hurricane, the lowest on the scale of five, located 225 kilometers (140 miles) east of Barbados, with maximum sustained winds of 120 kmh (75 mph).

"Maria has strengthened to a hurricane and could be near major hurricane intensity which it affects portions of the Leeward Islands over the next few days, bringing dangerous wind, storm surge and rainfall hazards," the hurricane center advised on Sunday.

The hurricane is expected to produce storm surges of up to 2 meters (6 feet) and dump 15-30 centimeters (6-12 inches) of rain across the Leeward Islands, as well as Puerto Rico and the US and British Virgin Islands through Wednesday night.

Maria comes less than two weeks after Irma, a category 4 hurricane, swept through the Caribbean, killing more than 80 people and causing massive destruction before pounding the US state of Florida. it is one of three storms moving through the Atlantic Ocean but it poses the most danger to already-damaged Caribbean islands.

Elsewhere, Hurricane Jose remained far off the US Atlantic coast and was forecast to avoid hitting the mainland.

EFCC Confirms Moves To Extradite Diezani Alison-madueke

By Evelyn Okakwu
The anti-graft agency, EFCC, on Wednesday confirmed that plans were in place to extradite a former petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke.
Several Nigerians have called for her extradition from the UK, after different corruption allegations were levelled against her.
Properties worth billions of Naira linked to her have since been forfeited to the federal government, many permanently.
Speaking on Wednesday while addressing journalists, civic groups and others, the EFCC acting chairman, Ibrahim Magu, confirmed the moves to extradite Mrs. Alison-Madueke.
“I want you to know that nobody will go unpunished. We are even seeking to extradite Diezani, but investigations are still ongoing,” Mr. Magu said.
“We have reached a level where nobody can stop us in the fight against corruption, but we all must realise that we are all stakeholders, and this fight is for the future generation.”
He added that all Nigerians must play their roles, “because EFCC can only do its best; but we must support the agency, and the law should take its course, policies should be strengthened, and punishment must be meted out in good time.”
Mr. Magu also blamed recent separatist agitations in Nigeria on corruption.
“Every evil that is happening now is caused by corruption: agitations, strikes, whatever. Corruption has chased our good human resources out of the country. It is the duty of this generation to correct the evils caused by corruption.”
The anti-graft chief also spoke on corruption among members of his organisation.
“I want you to tell us if there is corruption in the EFCC,” he said. “It makes no sense if people are fighting corruption and they are corrupt. So, tell us, don’t keep quiet.”

Pregnant mom kicked out of restaurant for wearing 'Weirdo' crop top

A pregnant mother, Charisha Gobin, who is expecting twins, has accused a restaurant of discrimnating against her because her belly was showing.

local news station KIRO that on Sunday she wore a black crop top with the word “Weirdo” across the front with a long white skirt to Buzz Inn Steakhouse in Marysville." data-reactid="31" type="text">Gobin said that on Sunday, she wore a black crop top with the word “Weirdo” across the front with a long white skirt to Buzz Inn Steakhouse in Marysville.

Gobin said that after she was seated, a waitress walked up to her and recited the restaurant’s dress code.

She said:

“The waitress/bartender stopped us and said, ‘I’m sorry, you can’t be here in that shirt’,” she explained. “I said, ‘Are you being serious with me right now?’ And she said, ‘Yep, you can’t be here’.”

The waitress said the restaurant has a “no shoes, no shirt, no service” policy, and that anyone in a crop top, wether pregnant or not, would have been asked to cover up.

Gobin, who is seven and a half months pregnant with a boy and a girl, said that she followed the restaurant's rules by wearing a shirt with sleeves.

“I didn’t even have cleavage showing,” she said. She also said she felt body-shamed because her “belly was bigger and sticking out.”
Gobin posted a photo of herself in her “offending” attire outside the restaurant on Facebook. Adding that she was “livid” and wasn’t going to stick around for an explanation.

In a statement, the restaurant apologized and said it would educate its staff on how not to “overly enforce” the rule, which it said is “intended to make all guests feel comfortable.”

They statement reads:

“Our apologies for the misunderstanding. The server in question has been with our company and a great employee for almost 20 years and was trying to use her best judgement [sic] and by no means was trying to be demeaning to the guest again our sincere apology for misunderstanding”.
However, Gobin says the restaurant has lost a customer because she would never go back there.

Her attire caused mixed reactions on social media, with some slamming the restaurant for being 'discrimnatory' while others praised the restaurant for keeping their policy and protecting other customers who were there to eat.

Moving From Single To Married

Moving From Single To Married
Married people have been seen in many funny displays ranging from wearing their wedding rings in the wrong fingers, not wearing them all, to, in worse and many cases, divorce. what is even funnier is the kind of responds you get from these people as reason:

  • the man who wears his wedding ring in the wrong finger responded that, its because he is married to the wrong woman.
  • couples who do not wear their wedding rings said they are too ashamed of their marriage, so they hid it from the world.
  • couples who ended up in a divorce court said they've had it to their limit.

These mentioned and many unmentioned cases share a common origin, which is "ABSENCE OF PREPARATION FOR MARRIAGE". It is worthy of note that, "you don't prepare in marriage, you prepare for marriage". like a soldier does not learn how to shot in the battle front, he does so before the battle.

ABSENCE OF PREPARATION FOR MARRIAGE is what has really gotten allot of couples through court processes to dissolve their marriages. Isn't funny how people spend time and money preparing for wedding, with little or no preparation for marriage proper? As a single who wishes to get married sooner or later, this is your time to prepare your mind and body for marriage.

I have listing some important things you need to know in your preparation

  1. Cultivate self-love: many people think love is when you love someone. Yeah, that's correct but not complete. And why is it not complete? Because when you love someone without loving yourself that is not love. It is obsession or there is something that person has that drives you crazy or your wishes for what that person has, low self esteem might also be in play here. Do not miss interpret the scripture here too "love your neighbour as yourself, Mark 12:31"  the scripture clearly supports my point, you should love your neighbour "as you love yourself", first of all, you should be able to love yourself, before you can share it with others or someone else. you don't give what you don't have. You might be wondering why I'm so stressing on self-love and its significance to marriage. this is because of the following: (1)when you have self-love, you are happy, and when you are happy, the person next to you will be happy too.(2)when you love yourself, you will not be dependent or over dependent on others for your happiness. This helps allot when choosing the right partner.(3)when you have self-love, you are a confident person who is not jealous, so you wont have problem with your future partner talking or interacting with others(4)you maintain the best of you when you love yourself.therefore self-love is important.
  2.  Finance: You need to establish your financial independence and maintain a stable income. Depending on your partner always for fund, especially the ladies, can breed contempt and reduce you to subordination. Everyone needs to support his/her family financially also.
  3. Personal hygiene: Good practice of personal hygiene helps you establish a healthy home, maintain good look and keep your spouse attracted you.
  4. What does your relationship(s) say about you: are you in a relationship? if yes, what does your partner think of you? if you're in a relationship, you need to access yourself with it. try to find out your flaws and do well to correct them. So you don't carry them into marriage.(1)if you are selfish with money or material things, and with decision making that affects the other person, do well to correct this. (2)if you are the type with thrust issues, do well to work on it, it is marriage and relationship killer. Never distrust your spouse unless you have obvious reason.
  5. Health: before you consider marriage, be sure you do a complete medical checkup: check your status, genotype, fertility etc. And be sure your spouse to be does same. I am not saying health is a determinant of marriage here, I am saying:(1)you should know whats going on inside of you. So if at all there is anything wrong, you can sort it out immediately, so it doesn't pose a threat to your marriage.(2)if you have a condition that is not easily or cannot be sorted out, discuss it with your partner-to-be, so you'll both deal with it together .

Just check yourself with these few stated points and groom yourself well for marriage. Good luck and God bless you.

Woman unexpectedly gives birth while shopping, calmly walks home with her new child

A shocking video shows a woman giving birth standing up after unexpectedly going into labour while out shopping – before calmly walking home with her baby.

The infant dropped to the ground and is seen flailing at the new mother’s feet as anxious voices are heard calling for help.

The dramatic birth happened in the city of Yunfu in southern China , where stunned onlookers saw the newborn’s sudden arrival as the mother browsed for fruit and vegetables.

She began screaming after her waters broke, and just a few seconds later the newborn dropped from between her legs, leaving her long dress stained in blood.

Despite the ordeal, the woman – believed to be in her 30s – refused a ride to hospital for further checks, opting instead to walk home with the baby in one arm and her shopping in the other.

Disbelieving shoppers called an ambulance, and nurses arrived shortly after the baby’s arrival to help the new mum cut the umbilical cord.

The child was placed on a chair as medics cleaned it and handed it back to the mother, who witnesses said remained standing the whole time and did not appear to be tired.

After confirming that the newborn was healthy, an offer by ambulance staff to take the mother to hospital was rebuffed, with the woman instead opting to walk home.

Reports in China said she wanted to save money.

Footage of the woman walking home while carrying the baby has gone viral.

Man Dies In Katsina Marriage Flogging Game

A young man, Yari Inusa, has died while competing with another suitor for a lady’s hand in marriage.

The incident happened at Durmin Biri village, in the Kafur Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Police sources said the man died following injuries he sustained on the head when he engaged in a Fulani traditional game of Sharo with another man, Ahmed Saidu, to determine who would marry the lady.

Sharo game entails two male suitors flogging each other for a woman’s hand in marriage. Whoever wins between them will marry the girl.

Inusa had reportedly flogged Saidu without any incident, but tragedy struck when it was the turn of Saidu to flog Inusa.

Saidu allegedly hit Inusa on the head, instead of hitting him on the back as the rules of the game dictates.

Inusa was said to have fainted after he was hit on the head; and eventual died.

The Katsina State Police Command spokesman, DSP Gambo Isah, confirmed the incident.

He said, “Inusa’s father, Mallam, reported the incident to the police, leading to the arrest of Saidu.”

He said Inusa’s corpse had been released to the family and buried according to Islamic rites.
