Wind-whipped fire destroyed iconic Marcal paper plant in New Jersey

The aftermath of Marcal fire in Elmwood Park, New Jersey, on January 31, 2019.

A massive fire at a Marcal paper plant that broke out at around 5 p.m. Wednesday amid bitterly cold temperatures gripping large parts of the Midwest and Northeast swelled to 10 alarms.

Investigators haven't immediately noticed anything suspicious about the huge, wind-whipped blaze that devastated the factory building in Elmwood Park, New Jersey, that had an iconic sign which served as a beacon for residents in that region of the state.

"There’s nothing at this point to lead us to believe there’s anything suspicious, but that remains to be seen," Elmwood Park Police Chief Michael Foligno said Thursday.

The fire was under control at around 2 a.m. and demolition teams were set to go in to allow firefighters to get in and look for hot spots and eventually clear the way for investigators to look for the cause, Foligno said. The fire is believed to have begun in a warehouse that houses large rolls of paper

Nigerians To Pay For National ID Card From 2022 – NIMC

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) on Thursday said Nigerians will begin to pay for the National Identity Card from year 2022.
The Director General of NIMC, Engr. Aliyu Aziz, disclosed this in Abuja at the Lunch Time Reform Seminar on “The National Digital Identity Ecosystem Strategic Road Map for the Enrollment of Nigerians and Legal Residents into the National Identity Database (NIDB)” organised by the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR).
According to him, the National electronics ID card can only be issued to Nigerians registered into the national identity system and legal residents who have attained the age of 16 years and above.
He however said that the National Identification Number (NIN) is assignable only to Nigerians.
“As a government, we recognise the huge importance of moving towards a Digital Government. Therefore, we must embrace and harness the potentials inherent in digital identity to build and develop our country.
“Nations all over the world and in particular, developed countries have utilized identity as a foundation to transforming governance and enhancing service delivery in the areas of healthcare, agriculture, voting, transportation, financial inclusion, access to basic service and welfare programmes,” he said.
He assured Nigerians that no one shall be denied any government services on account of not having the National Identity Number (NIN).
He said, “Rather, the mandatory enrolment or collection of data by the above-mentioned government agencies or their licensed agents, along with private sector organisations to be licensed by NIMC
under the digital identity ecosystem means fast-tracking of the enrolment process in the national identity system.
“Instead, in its wisdom, the Federal Government approved the new digital identity ecosystem which ensures and mandates all government agencies earlier mentioned and private sector organisations to be licensed by NIMC, to collect citizens’ data using guidelines issued by the NIMC and through secure approved channels of communication send such data to NIMC to generate the NIN.
He urged Nigerians to make use of the remaining three years to get registered and obtained their cards.
In his welcome remarks, the acting Director-General, BPSR, Mr. Dasuki Arabi, represented by the Director, Strategy, Innovation and Research (SIR), Mr. Iyang Anyang, noted that the world was currently facing political, economic, social and technological challenges.
He said the challenges have spurred government institutions to undergo various reforms to cope, address and manage change, for improved performance on quality service delivery to citizens.

Florida man wired $200,000 to Bulgarian 'Cam Girl' before killing family

Grant Amato, 29, was arrested Monday morning and is accused of killing his parents, Chad Amato, 59, and Margaret Amato, 61, and his brother, Cody Amato, 31. They were found dead Friday in their home on Sultan Circle in Chuluota after a coworker reported that Cody Amato hadn't shown up for work.

In the three months beforehand, deputies said Grant Amato stole $200,000 from his parents and brother and wired those funds to a woman in Bulgaria with whom he had been communicating since June on Cam Girls, an adult web site.

Investigators spoke to the suspect's surviving brother who said Grant Amato was speaking with an online call girl and sending her large amounts of money. The brother said the girl knew where the family lived, and that concerned Margret Amato.

Grant Amato told investigators his parents gave him an ultimatum after they learned about the theft: Complete a 60-day internet and sex addiction program or leave the family home. Grant Amato went Dec.22 in Fort Lauderdale to the facility and checked out Jan. 4, according to the arrest warrant.

The suspect entered the treatment facility two days after Chad and Margaret Amato reported Grant Amato missing on Dec. 20 and told Seminole County Sheriff's Office deputies their son was suffering from depression, according to the incident report. The couple told deputies Grant Amato had access to firearms and they were "100 percent convinced he will try to harm himself."

The missing persons report was closed with the Sheriff's Office after deputies spoke with Grant Amato and said their evaluation did not indicate he needed a psychiatric evaluation. He told deputies he just needed a break from his mother and did not intend to harm himself.

When he returned from the south Florida facility to his parents' home in Chuluota, they laid out ground rules and said if he broke any of the rules, he would have to immediately leave the home, Amato told investigators.

One of the guidelines Chad Amato set for his 29-year-old son included no communications with the Bulgarian woman. Grant Amato told investigators this was unfair because she was his girlfriend and he continued to talk to her online. Chad Amato learned about their continued relationship and confronted his son on the night of Jan. 24, telling the suspect to leave the house, according to the arrest report.

The family was found dead the next morning, all suffering from "execution style" wounds, according to the Seminole County Sheriff's Office crime scene analysts.

Investigators said Grant Amato took several steps to try and provide a cover-up story, including writing a fake note from his brother, Cody Amato, that told him to "just please come home."

Cody Amato's girlfriend told investigators that over the past few months, the family had problems with the suspect that included him stealing $60,000 from Cody Amato and his guns. The girlfriend said Grant Amato sold the firearms without his brother's permission.

Cody Amato had previously expressed concern that his brother would kill everyone, his girlfriend told investigators.

A previous arrest report shows Grant Amato was fired from his job at a hospital after he was accused of stealing prescription pills.

Grant Amato was detained for questioning Saturday but was released Sunday. He was arrested hours after his release around 1 a.m. Monday at a Lake Mary hotel.

Amato is charged with three counts of first-degree murder.

This developing story will be updated.

Facebook Denies Half Of Its Users Are Fake Accounts

Fake profiles on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram are pretty common, whether they are used for spam marketing, scams, and so on. However we imagine that most of these platforms probably have a handle on such matters, or do they? That’s what Facebook critic Aaron Greenspan seems to suggest in a report (via Mashable) where he alleges that half of Facebook’s reported monthly active users are actually fake.

According to the report, “The fact of the matter is that Facebook does not now and will not ever have an accurate way to measure its fake account problem. Taking all of these factors into account, we estimate that 50 percent or more of Facebook’s current MAUs are actually fake.” Greenspan and Facebook have a bit of a contentious past over the term “the Face Book”.

This trademark issue was said to have been resolved way back in 2009, but it seems that Greenspan is still not a huge fan of the company. On their end, Facebook has denied Greenspan’s allegations where in a statement issued by the company, “This is unequivocally wrong and responsible reporting means reporting facts, even if it’s about fake accounts.”

Like we said, fake accounts are to be expected of most social networks and online services, but whether or not it is as high as 50% remains to be seen.
