Oklahoma Missionary Sentenced to 40 Years for Sexually Abusing Children in Kenya

Matthew Lane Durham, 21, was sentenced to four decades in prison by Judge David L. Russell on four counts of “engaging in illicit sexual conduct in foreign places,” according to court documents.

“In a span of just 33 days,” prosecutors wrote to the court, Durham “raped three girls — ages 5, 9 and 15 — at least eight times. During that same time period, he sexually molested a 12-year-old boy twice.”

The prosecutors said that Durham “not only forcefully sexually abused these children,” but “he psychologically damaged them by taking advantage of their trust he received from the children.”

A jury found Durham guilty on seven counts of the charge in June, court records show. Russell acquitted Durham on three of the counts in January, writing that the prosecutors “failed to establish that he engaged in a ‘sexual act’ ” with the children identified in those charges.

Durham’s attorney, Stephen Jones, told CNN on Monday that he plans to appeal the court’s decision.

Fallout in Kenya

The region of the eastern African nation that Durham volunteered in has also been shaken, prosecutors say.

In a sentencing memorandum to the court in February, they wrote that Durham’s actions “have had a chilling effect on the lives of dozens of foreign volunteers in Kenya and elsewhere who must now live under the cloud of suspicion … there is a real perception among Upendo’s local Kenyan community that more pedophiles lurk among the volunteers, especially the male volunteers.”

In 2014, Durham arrived at Upendo Children’s Home in Nairobi to volunteer with neglected children, according to the criminal complaint. Durham had previously volunteered at the school three times before.

The organization, funded by an American citizen, recruits volunteers from the Oklahoma church community and provides food, housing and clothes to neglected children in Nairobi, according to the complaint.

Upon arriving in 2014, Durham requested to stay at an “overflow bunk” in the school rather than an off-site facilities with sponsor families to be in a “better position to assist the children,” the complaint says.

A school caretaker began to notice odd behavior between Durham and the children, including “lingering embraces” and “lying beside some of the children on their beds” at night, the complaint says.

Durham was confronted by leaders at the school who then held his passport, the complaint says. They returned the passport to him days later, and he flew back to Oklahoma.

At the time of his arrest, Durham’s attorney told CNN that Durham was coerced into a confession to get his passport back.

Navy destroy illegal refinery with 1.59m litres of stolen diesel

The Swamp Buggy strategy adopted by the navy replaces a former approach which involved setting ablaze illegal refineries

The Nigerian Navy on Friday said it had discovered and destroyed an illegal refinery with 1.59 million litres of illegally refined diesel during a mop-up operation in Port Harcourt.
Speaking at the destruction exercise, Commodore Williams Kayoda, the Commander of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder, however said no arrest was made during the raid.
Kayoda said the navy deployed troops to the site after it got intelligence report about the illegal refinery situated around Iwofe, Rumuolumeni area of Port Harcourt.
“Troops arriving at the site discovered 24 metallic tanks with each containing 60,000 litres of petroleum product suspected to be illegally refined diesel.
“Similarly, we discovered wooden boats with 150,000 litres of diesel believed to be stolen diesel.
“The petroleum product was evacuated to a safe location before troops destroyed the illegal refinery using a Swamp Buggy machine which completely crushed the metallic tanks.

“This new strategy is part of our efforts to end current air pollution in Port Harcourt while making it difficult for oil thieves to revive illegal refineries after it was destroyed,” he said.
The commander said the use of “Swamp Buggy” was part of tactics which involved complete crushing of metal tanks rather than setting both storage tanks and petroleum products ablaze.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the new strategy was adopted following reports that burning of illegal refineries was partly responsible for current air pollution in Port Harcourt.
The Swamp Buggy strategy adopted by the navy replaces a former approach which involved setting ablaze illegal refineries and illegal bunker sites with its petroleum products.
Kayoda said the navy was committed to protecting the environment and health of residents and assured that it would carry out its mandate in line with standard practice.
“The Nigerian Navy will sustain this strategy until we bring this menace to a stop because the economic prosperity of the nation cannot be compromised to criminal individuals and groups.
“Operation Rivers Sweep which was concluded in February and being consolidated with ongoing Operation White Valentine are part of efforts to stop illegal bunkering and oil theft,” he said.
Also speaking during destruction exercise, Prof. Roseline Konya, the Rivers Commissioner of Environment, said the Rivers Government had setup a task force which was mandated to discover and stop the source of the air pollution.
She said that Gov. Nyesom Wike had given the task force a matching order to locate the source of the air pollution which causes lung infection and cancer.
“We have seen that the military were in the past burning illegal refineries partly because they had no alternatives.
“We are glad to witness that they no longer burn illegal refineries; but destroy the sites by removing illegally refined petroleum products before they crush storage tanks with Swap Buggy machines.
“The Rivers government is pleading with individuals organisations such as the Army and Navy to assist us locate and eradicate the source of the soot,” she said.
Konya, who is chairperson of the task force, commended the navy on the new Swamp Buggy strategy.

Bayelsa Gov. Signs Education Bills Into Law

The Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, has signed the Higher Education Students’ Loan and Education Development Trust Fund bills into law, targeted at building the manpower base of the state.
Assenting to the two bills in Government House, Yenagoa, governor Dickson described the laws as the most revolutionary intervention in the education sector, as they would provide unique opportunities for the Bayelsa youths to advance their educational career.

The Governor, noted that, “The education sector has continued to receive priority attention, since my administration’s inception in 2012, the educational laws would provide a mechanism for sustainable development in the sector.

“The new legislation will go a long way in checking the issue of school drop-outs, due to financial constraints as provision is made for indigent students to draw from the Higher Education loan facility”.

Commenting on the Education Development Trust Fund, governor Dickson said “It was mandatory for all Bayelsans working in the public service, government officials as well as the private sector to contribute to the fund in addition to the 10 percent of the state’s Internally Generated Revenue in support of the fund on a monthly basis”.

To this end, he called on the organized labour and the people of the State to support rather than politicise the new educational policy, as the initiative would be beneficial to the average Bayelsan.

The Governor also noted that 50billion Naira has so far been invested into the education sector with the establishment of 25 constituency compulsory free boarding secondary schools, in addition to 15 model secondary schools, including the Ijaw National Academy, which has taken off.

Dickson, who announced the appointment of Prof. Turner Isoun, as the pioneer chairman of the State Education Development Trust Fund, said, the two boards will oversee the new educational schemes which will be established in due course.

Presenting the two bills for the Governor’s assent, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Konbowei Benson said the Bayelsa State Higher Education Students Loan Bill was forwarded to the House on August 10, 2016, while the Education Development Trust Fund bill was presented on July 19, 2016 and passed on February 13, 2017.

Drama as pastor insists on resurrecting dead wife [PHOTOS]

A 40-year-old Pastor, Robinson Githumba of Eagle Prophetic Church has failed in his attempt to pray his dead wife back to life.
Githumba and his followers stormed the Embu mortuary in Nairobi, Kenya yesterday praying in a bid to resurrect his wife, Polly Kagendo, 38, who died of Tuberculosis on Sunday.

The clergy man was said to have travelled from Rwika Village, Mbeere South sub-county with his followers.

On arrival at Gakwegori funeral at 8am, he asked the mortuary attendants to remove his wife’s body from the morgue and put it in an open place for prayers.

With bibles, they prayed enthusiastically, singing and shouting at the top of their voices expecting a miracle, Naironinews reports.
The pastor insisted that his wife was not dead but only resting and would resurrect on the fourth day like the biblical Lazarus.

Drenched in sweat, they continued until 5pm when the attendants sought to return the body as they were to close for the day.

The pastor and his team did not allow the press to enter the mortuary, but only spoke to members of the media outside.

He said his wife fell sick and was rushed to Mwea hospital where she passed away.

The report quoted Githumba as saying he believes his wife, “whom he loved so much,” will rise again.

He said, “That is why we are praying for her resurrection. We know God is the most powerful being.”

“I know she will be visited after three days the way Jesus visited Lazarus and woke him up from the dead.

“I know this will also happen to my wife.”

Activists chain themselves to plane at Stansted airport in protest at deportation of failed asylum seekers from Nigeria and Ghana

An investigation has been launched after a dozen protesters evaded security at London Stansted airport to chain themselves to a plane on the runway.

The activists blockaded the chartered jet, said to be carrying failed asylum seekers from Nigeria and Ghana on behalf of the Home Office, at just after 10pm last night.

Flights were grounded for around 90 minutes, with eight landings diverted to alternate airports, as Essex Police dealt with the incident.

The security breach came despite heightened security in the wake of last Wednesday’s terror attack at Westminster, which left four people dead.

An airport spokesman said last night: “There are a number of protesters on the north side of the airport away from the passenger terminal, away from the commercial side of the airport, where the private terminals are.

FACEBOOK is about to stop working on many phones

Facebook and its Messenger app will stop working for a number of smartphone users by the end of March.

The social media giant has announced it is ending support for devices running some older versions of the apps, including v55 of the Facebook app and v10 of Messenger on Android.

It also announced it was stopping support for Facebook for Windows Phone.

If you find you are suddenly unable to run either app, Facebook suggests updating to the latest version, or migrating to Facebook Lite, a pared down version of the platform.
If your mobile does not support the latest versions of Facebook, the company recommends going to Facebook.com through your mobile browser.

Defending its decision to end support for older versions, Facebook said in a blog: “Our team spends countless hours making it the best way to message your friends and family.

“One of the ways we continue to improve is by consistently introducing rich features, like voice and video calling, games, and bots for Messenger. Using older versions of apps means that experiences won’t work well or sometimes not at all.”

The company says it has “reached out” to those affected and is also offering suggestions in Messenger to people about to lose access.

The full list of devices about to lose support from Facebook includes: v55 of the Facebook app and Messenger v10 on Android, Facebook for iPad v26, Messenger v8 for iOS and Facebook for iOS released in 2011, Facebook for Windows Phone, Messenger for Windows Phone 8 and 8.1, and Facebook for Windows 8 and the 8.1 desktop app.

70-yr old UCC graduate proves it’s not late to get another degree

It was all joy when colleagues, relatives and friends gathered over the weekend at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) for the school’s 49th graduation ceremony. Graduands were called up one after the other to the dais to be congratulated by school authorities on their feat. Mrs. Chris Dadzie, probably received the loudest applauds when her name was mentioned. She is 70, and was graduating with a Master of Arts degree in Governance Democracy Law and Development. Ms. Dadzie was among the very few significantly older persons to have successfully completed the program. For one who began her education in the 1950s, it must have been a long way coming. Having served in various capacities in the areas of governance and law for over 4 decades, Ms. Dadzie’s drive to pursue higher education in that area could only be seen as her determination to do much more for the country. She told citifmonline.com that, “I was inspired by the desire to enhance my knowledge on governance and development generally towards advocacy and other interventions for my human rights work. One person who encouraged me to join and stay through this programme at UCC instead of other places was Roseline B. Obeng of blessed memory.” A retired Army Captain, Chris Dadzie comes across as a purpose driven individual whose quest for knowledge to better the lots of persons she assists cannot be easily dampened.

For her, the challenges associated with pursuing the program at the University of Cape Coast did not bother much about the fact that she was advanced in age, but of the mode of teaching. “Age was not an issue, at least I wasn’t aware of one. There were a number of even older people in my class. Maybe it was an issue because I (plus a few of my mates) didn’t understand why we should be taught like ancient school pupils without the expected level of engagement in discussion of the topics we had expected.” Her major surprise throughout the program was how teaching and learning appeared to be a little behind modern ways of doing so; writing dictated notes, limited internet library facility and getting supervisors for long papers. “The challenges were many; limited consistency in the system for imparting knowledge. For instance, irregularity of lecture times, tutors and even classrooms rather old fashioned ways of long periods of writing down dictated notes for some of the subjects, highly limited internet library facilities, some grave issues with obtaining supervision for required long paper, definitely the feeling that students, even at that graduate level, are simply expected to take instructions, since suggestions and/or protests about some of the above issues were not condemned or met with threats of victimization.” In the face of these rather gloomy and tough circumstances, the Holy Child Second old student (1959 – 1965) today, is a proud holder of a Master of Arts degree, adding to her already impressive academic and professional achievements. It is worth noting that Ms. Dadzie obtained her LLM certificate in 1968 and became a Barrister at law the following year. After almost a decade serving as a Captain in the Legal Directorate of the Ghana Army (1970 – 1979), she has also served as the Legal director, Public education of the Commission of Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) between 1993 and 2007, and is recognized as one of the few people who helped to set up the Commission. She is a past president of the International Federation Of Women Lawyers (FIDA).

Huddah: ‘I wanna eat my own PU**Y. I’m so proud of myself!’, replaces breast implant (Photos)

Huddah Monroe has replaced one of her breast implants and the Kenyan socialite is super proud of herself.

According to Ghafla, the former BBA star, who recently visited Beverly Hills, went on the trip to replace one of her breast implants, a surgery that reportedly was performed by Dr. Eugene Kim and Dr. David Kim’s plastic surgery clinic in the city.

Recall that the former BBA star was mocked by her nemesis Vera Sidika, after the latter discovered that Huddah was visiting the United States.

Vera went on a long rant, alleging that Huddah was in Miami for a cheap, dangerous surgery, and then she urged her adversary to ‘hustle’ , make more money and opt for a better plastic surgery in Beverly Hills, where the procedure is much safer.

Huddah replied later, slamming Vera. While the petite socialite did not explicitly say she was in the city for plastic surgery, she clarified that she wasn’t in Miami either. “I don’t usually take pics at sign posts but it’s BEVERLY HILLS Bitch! 🖕🏾And anyways how else would you know I’ve been here 😂 #ThatShouldTeachEm,” she said.

Well, Ghafla has confirmed that Huddah has just had an implant replaced. And now, the socialite is bragging about her achievement and is so proud of herself that she longs to give herself a ‘head’.

“I wanna eat my own Pu**y coz I’m so Fuckin PROUD of myself right now……. Work in Progresssss!!!!! #STARGAL⭐️️ #MajorAfricanSauce #mistressofalltrades,” Huddah wrote.

Yeah, some women can now brag about their plastic surgeries!

The secret about Donald and Melania Trump Relationship

Despite recent rumours that President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have been going through a rough patch, a close friend of the couple insists that this isn't the case.
In an interview with the Washington Post on Monday, Karen LeFrak - a longtime friend of the couple and wife of developer Richard LeFrak - was asked how Trump was adjusting to her new role as first lady, and how the change has affected her marriage, if at all.
"Mrs. Trump is enjoying her life and new role," she said, adding that "[she and her husband] are very happy! Their relationship is great."

"All these rabid rumours about her and their relationship are laughable and fictional," she continued.
LeFrak went on to insist that the first lady has been taking her time with "carving out an important role to support women and children" and "redecorating their residence in the White House," despite the fact she is still living in New York with her son, Barron, until the end of the school year.

140 killed by meningitis in Nigeria

The disease is spreading amidst fears it could be out of control if refugee camps, prisons and police cells become affected through crowds, the BBC's Chris Ewokor in Abuja says. Vaccination is an effective way of preventing against meningitis. However, a new strain, which may have been imported from a neighbouring country is now prevalent in Nigeria and requires a different type of vaccine, Nigerian Minister of Health Isaac Adewole said. BBC reports that the seasonal outbreak has been attributed to cold nights, dusty winds and dry weather, which were aggravated by traditional beliefs, poor hygiene, and overpopulation.

Ukraine placed Russian general on wanted list

The Military Prosecutor's office of Ukraine charged Major General Alexei Zavizyon, the commander of the 41st Army of the Central Military District of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, with committing a number of crimes.

According to the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine (GPU), the Russian General, during the period from February to July 2015, commanded the so-called "1st Army Corps" in the Donetsk region.

"Zavizyon by giving orders, monitoring their implementation, and coordinating actions through the subordinate officers of the Russian Armed Forces, ensured that the positions of ATO [Ukrainian] forces were fired upon daily by illegally armed units, and ordered armed attacks on servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, other military units, and law enforcement agencies," the GPU's statement says.

As a result of his committing these deliberate acts, at least 3,000 were killed and more than 8,000 Ukrainian servicemen were wounded. In addition, the Donetsk and Luhansk regions were occupied and the state of Ukraine suffered significant material losses.

As a result, Alexei Zavizyon was charged with committing crimes under part 3 of Article 110 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (intentional acts committed with the goal to change the borders of the territory and the state border of Ukraine in violation of the procedure established by the Constitution of Ukraine, which led to the death of people and other serious consequences), Part 2 of Article 28, part 2 of Article 437 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (conducting an aggressive war), Part 1 of Article 258-3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (participation in a terrorist organization).

"The suspect has been placed on the wanted list, and a petition to detain him is being prepared as a preventative measure to ensure he will be present for the hearing," the GPU noted.

According to public sources, Zavizyon Alexei Vladimirovich is a Russian military commander, Major General (2007), and commander of the 41st Army of the Central Military District of the Russian Armed Forces (since 2015).

President Petro Poroshenko has said that there are 9,000 Russian soldiers in Ukraine.

Emmy Rossum Robbed of $150,000 Jewelry in Alleged Home Invasion

The 30-year-old actress has reportedly been stripped of around $150,000 in antique jewelry after burglars broke into her West LA home and emptied the contents of two locked safes.

TMZ.com reports the 'Shameless' star had been in New York City when the alleged robbery took place last week, and it was her housekeeper who noticed the missing items when they saw a smashed pane of glass on the property's back door on Friday (03.24.17).

Law enforcement sources reportedly told the publication: "Emmy was in NYC last week when the housekeeper showed up on Wednesday and everything was fine. But on Friday, the housekeeper returned to a crime scene

"The housekeeper noticed the power was off and a glass pane on a back door was smashed."

It is believed the culprit was able to get into Emmy's safes after she reportedly left the combination to the secured boxes written beside each safe.

Nothing else was taken in the raid, and law enforcement sources told TMZ they believe the thief cut the power in order to turn off the security alarm.

The 'Beautiful Creatures' actress isn't the first celebrity to have their home targeted recently either, as reality star and model Kendall Jenner was reportedly robbed of $200,000 in jewelry earlier this month.

It is thought the burglars entered Kendall's house sometime between her leaving at lunchtime and returning home at 8pm. Kendall didn't raise the alarm at first as she didn't realise things had gone missing until she went to her bedroom just after one in the morning.

Police found no evidence of forced entry, and are working under the assumption that Kendall's missing jewellery was taken by someone who attended a party at the home shortly before she noticed the items were gone.

Meanwhile, Jaime Pressly, Yasiel Puig, Derek Fisher, Alanis Morissette, Cesar Millan and Nick Young have all reportedly been targeted by burglars this year.

Boko Haram kills three civilians in NE Nigeria for collaborating with military

The Boko Haram Takfiri terrorist group has raided a village in northeast Nigeria, killing three civilians on suspicion of collaborating with the military.

Nigerian security sources said on Monday that the fatalities had occurred two days earlier when the terrorists stormed Kalari Abdiye village, in Borno State.

"They singled out the four men whom they accused of collaboration with the military. They accused the men of passing information to the military," said a military officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"The gunmen took the men outside the village where they slaughtered three of the men."

The officer said three locals had their throats cut while the fourth was left severely wounded.

Security sources said that the Takfiri terrorist group had also seized livestock from a nearby village without leaving any civilian casualties.

Nigeria has been at war with Boko Haram since the group launched militancy in Borno State about eight years ago. More than 20,000 people have been killed while the violence has displaced over 2.7 million others.

Boko Haram has pledged allegiance to the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group, which has been wreaking havoc in the Middle East and North Africa over the past few years.

NYSC denies overseas posting

ABUJA – The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Monday, denied the report flying on the socio media that the scheme had commenced posting of corps members to countries abroad. The Director General of the NYSC, Brig-General Suleiman Kazaure said in spite of some people trying to run down the scheme and give it a battered image, they had improved on the online registration to ensure efficiency in the system.

Kazaure, who was speaking at a workshop organised by the image makers of the scheme in Abuja, said that the scheme would not operate outside it enabling laws, saying “we are on the right track. “With the online registration we have been able to check ghost corps members and a lot of things no
doubt it has make it easier for both prospective corps members and scheme.” Buttressing the DG’s point on mobilization, the Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs Abosede Aderibigbe told Vanguard that posting corps members abroad to serve was not part of the law that established the NYSC. Describing the report as misleading, Aderibigbe urged the public not to take social media report as the position of the NYSC. “It is a lie. I saw it on face book; it is not in the Act that established the NYSC. We do not operate outside the law that created the scheme,” she concluded. Kazaure explained that the need to enhance public perception necessitated the organization of the workshop, calling on the participants “to remain focused in line with our determination to enhance operational efficiency in all ramifications.”

INTERPOL seizes 55 tonnes of drugs across West Africa and Latin America, 357 suspects arrested

An international operation across Latin America and West Africa by Interpol between 6 and 15 March,2017, has netted 55 tonnes of drugs, a seizure which underlines the ‘massive scale' of activities of transnational organized crime groups, INTERPOL Secretary General Jürgen Stock said.
Operation Lionfish III involved 5,000 law enforcement officials in 13 countries, with 357 arrests and the bulk of seizures resulting from intelligence-led operations by police in participating countries.

“This operation highlights the massive scale of activities of organized crime groups in Latin America and West Africa channeling drugs into Europe," said Secretary General Stock.
“As law enforcement faces increasing demands on its resources, it is a significant reminder of the wide range of threats facing communities worldwide, not only from terrorism, but also by transnational organized crime networks."
"The commitment of participating countries to working in a coordinated fashion via INTERPOL's global network to disrupt drug trafficking routes and crime groups underpinned the success of this operation," added Mr Stock.
Seizures in the operation included 52 tonnes of cocaine, cannabis and heroin, with the cocaine haul of 25 tonnes alone estimated to be worth approximately USD 950 million.

The operation further highlighted how precursor chemicals are being diverted from legitimate to illicit purposes, with 20 clandestine laboratories dismantled and three tonnes of precursor chemicals seized.

“The Brazilian Federal Police was pleased to play a key role in Operation Lionfish by hosting its operational coordination unit. INTERPOL’s policing capabilities and global network helped enhance the capacity of participating countries to cooperate and seize large quantities of drugs as well as arrest high level targets,” said Rogerio Galloro, Executive Director of the Brazilian Federal Police.

The operation was co-organized by INTERPOL’s General Secretariat headquarters in Lyon, with support from the INTERPOL Regional Bureaus in Buenos Aires and Abidjan. INTERPOL’s Criminal Networks unit facilitated information exchange and cross-checking against INTERPOL’s global databases in real time.

“Operation Lionfish III shows the intrinsic role of INTERPOL Regional Bureaus in supporting member countries combat organized crime and drug trafficking affecting entire regions,” said Kedji Abbe, Head of the INTERPOL Regional Bureau in Abidjan.
The operation was held under the framework of INTERPOL’s CRIMJUST project, managed jointly with the UNODC and Transparency International and funded by the European Union.

It aims to strengthen criminal investigations and cooperation along cocaine routes in Latin America, the Caribbean and West Africa by fostering interregional law enforcement coordination and information sharing.
Drawing on the resources of INTERPOL’s Project Fortaleza which supports Latin American countries fight organized crime syndicates, the operation involved Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Cape Verde, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Nigeria, Panama and Peru.
