Holyoke man admits to rape of 9-year-old girl

SPRINGFIELD -- Carlos Santiago-Alvarez, 41, of Holyoke, was sentenced Monday to six to eight years in state prison followed by five years probation in a child rape case.
Santiago-Alvarez pleaded guilty to two counts of rape of a child and two counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14. The victim was 9 years old.

Assistant District Attorney Eileen M. Sears asked Hampden Superior Court Judge John S. Ferrara to sentence Santiago-Alvarez to eight to nine years in prison followed by seven years probation.

Defense lawyer Jennifer E. Cox asked Ferrara to sentence her client to three to five years in state prison followed by three years probation. Santiago-Alvarez does not have a criminal record.

Sears said in March 2016 the girl and her mother went to the Holyoke Police Department. The girl said the man had forced her to perform oral sex on him and then performed oral sex on her.

Ferrara said Santiago-Alvarez "undoubtedly caused her grievous harm."

He said, "None of us know what the long-term effects can be."
