CBN Sells Another $250m To Prop Up Naira Value

The central bank of Nigeria on Monday sold another $250 million to reduce market illiquidity and prop up the Naira value.

The Acting Director, Corporate Communications Department, CBN, Mr. Isaac Okorafor, said $100 million was injected into the interbank market, while both the Small and Medium Enterprises and Invisible segments were appropriated $85 million and $65 million respectively.

Okorafor further stated that the apex bank would inject more liquidity into the foreign exchange market in the coming days, noting that the intervention was necessary to enhance Naira stability by ensuring that pressures on the market from those seeking forex for school fees and vacation were eased.

The Naira improved by N3 from N370 per US dollar to N367 on the parallel market.

On the Investors’ window, the local currency closes at N359.58 against the US dollar, better than the N366.79 recorded on Friday.

Also, the Naira remain moderately stable against the British pound and the Euro-single currencies, traded at N478 and N433 respectively.

Traders were optimistic that the Naira would remain stable in the days ahead.

“While intermittent intervention is imperative to forex stability, reviving the manufacturing sector through the federal government diversification agenda remains key to long term sustainability and economic growth,” said Samed Olukoya, a foreign exchange research analyst at Investors king Ltd.

Inflation rate declined for a sixth consecutive month in July to 16.05 percent from 16.10 percent in June. The lowest since July 2016.

Oshi Agabi Creates Koniku Kore, Computer That Can Smell Explosives, Cancer Cells

NIGERIAN SCIENTIST CREATES A COMPUTER THAT CAN SMELL EXPLOSIVES AND CANCER CELLS

Silicon Valley-based Oshi Agabi has unveiled a computer based not on silicon but on mice neurons at the TEDGlobal conference in Tanzania. The system has been trained to recognise the smell of explosives and could be used to replace traditional airport security, he said. .

Eventually the modem-sized device - dubbed Koniku Kore - could provide the brain for future robots. Agabi is attempting to reverse-engineer biology, which already accomplishes this function with a fraction of the power it would take a silicon-based processor.

EYES OF LAGOS learnt that, He launched his start-up Koniku over a year ago, has raised $1m (£800,000) in funding and claims it is already making profits of $10m in deals with the security industry. Koniku Kore is an amalgam of living neurons and silicon, with olfactory capabilities — basically sensors that can detect and recognise smells. .

"You can give the neurons instructions about what to do - in our case we tell it to provide a receptor that can detect explosives." He envisages a future where such devices can be discreetly used at various points in airports, eliminating the need for queues to get through airport security. .

As well as being used for bomb detection, the device could be used to detect illness by sensing markers of a disease in the air molecules that a patient gives off. .

A self-described "scrawny, nerdy kid," Agabi grew up in the suburb of Surulere in Lagos, Nigeria and obtained a Bachelors degree in Physics from University of Lagos. .

He went on to do further studies in physics and neuroscience in Sweden and Switzerland. "One of the things growing up in Lagos imparts in you is grit," he says. "Lagos is a place that demands grit. Growing up there gave me an unconventional way of always looking at problems."

‘A world first’

Agabi said the Koniku Kore device is “a world first” and able to do just that, essentially through breathing in and smelling the air.

He said “major brands”, including those in the travel industry, had signed up and the start-up’s current revenues of $8 million (7 million euros) were expected to leap to $30 million by 2018.

One of the main challenges was finding a way to keep the neurons alive, a secret Agabi did not wish to expand on, saying only they could be kept alive for two years in a lab environment and two months in the device.

As AI improves in leaps and bounds, scientists are trying to make and succeeding in making machines more like our brains, able to learn and understand their surroundings: a prospect that is terrifying for many.

Musk, who has repeatedly warned about the perils of AI making humans obsolete, is working on a new project to implant “neural lace” brain-interface technology to prevent humans becoming like a “house cat” to potential machine masters.

However, Agabi, who grew up in Lagos where he helped his mother sell food on the streets, believes the future of AI lies in making machines more alive.

He believes his company could build a cognitive humanoid system based on synthetic living neurons in the next five to seven years. “It’s not science fiction,” he told AFP.

“We want to build a brain of biological neurons - an autonomous system that has intelligence. We do not want to build a human brain.”

Agabi did a bachelors degree in theoretical physics in Lagos before taking an interest in neuroscience and bio-engineering for his PhD in London.

African innovation at TED

He spoke at the opening session of the four-day TEDGlobal conference, putting African ideas, innovation and creativity in the spotlight with a variety of speakers who each get an 18-minute window to get across their message of choice.

TED - originally known as Technology, Entertainment and Design - has built a global following for its online videos of inspiring talks devoted to “ideas worth spreading”.

The annual international version is taking place in Africa for the first time in a decade with a new crop of “TED Fellows” from the continent to take to the stage.

“This gathering couldn’t come a moment too soon,” said TEDGlobal co-curator Emeka Okafor. “Africa has experienced spectacular economic, demographic and creative growth, but both opportunity and danger are rising at an exponential rate. Our conference will gather the idea catalysts, problem-solvers and change-makers already hard at work here charting Africa’s own path to modernity.”

UEFA Champions League Draw Today At 5pm

The draws would be held at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco unlike previous held in Nyon, Switzerland.

Pot 1 contains the title holders and the champions of the top seven associations based on their 2016 UEFA country coefficients.[4] If the title holders are one of the champions of the top seven associations, the champions of the association ranked eighth are also seeded into Pot 1.

Pot 2, 3 and 4 contain the remaining teams, seeded based on their 2017 UEFA club coefficients.[5]
On 17 July 2014, the UEFA emergency panel ruled that Ukrainian and Russian clubs would not be drawn against each other "until further notice" due to the political unrest between the countries.[6]

Moreover, the draw is controlled for teams from the same association in order to split the teams evenly into the two sets of four groups (A–D, E–H) for maximum television coverage. On each matchday, one set of four groups play their matches on Tuesday, while the other set of four groups play their matches on Wednesday, with the two sets of groups alternating between each matchday.

The fixtures are decided after the draw, using a computer draw not shown to public, with the following match sequence (Regulations Article 16.02).

As well as deciding the make-up of the groups, the occasion will also see the presentation of a number of awards, including the UEFA Men's Player of the Year and Women's Player of the Year. The best goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and forward from last season's competition will also have their performances recognised at the ceremony.
UEFA Youth League

The youth teams of the 32 Champions League group stage participants also take part in the UEFA Youth League. However, unlike the Champions League, the Youth League features a total of 64 teams, with the youth domestic champions of the top 32 leagues also entering. Red Bull Salzburg won the 2016-17 Youth League, defeating Benfica in the final.

The woman , Modinat Mufutau , on Tuesday told an Idi -Ogungun Customary Court , Agodi in Ibadan how she alternated two husbands in order to satisfy herself and get enough money to take care of her three children .
Modinat had begged the court to dissolve her 12 years relationship to one of her husbands , Ajadi Mufutau , for alleged lack of care and maltreatment .
She told the court that she met Mufutau in 2005 , and he impregnated her without marriage formalities.
The petitioner said that at the beginning of the relationship Mufutau pretended to be a nice and responsible man.
“ But when he impregnated me , he began maltreating and beating me whenever I demanded money for antenatal care.
“ I left his house after delivery and hooked up with another man , Saheed , who impregnated me two years later but turned me into a punching bag after delivery of my second child for him .
“ Later, I settled down with Mufutau , got pregnant for him again , but Saheed , who I have the second child for begged me to continue with him.

Forex Transactions On Investors & Exporters Window Hit $7.62bn

The total turnover of forex transactions on the Investors and Exporters window stood at US$7.62 billion as at August 11, a report has shown.
The increase, according to the monthly analysis by FSDH Merchant Bank Limited, has been consistent since April 2017.
They projected that the turnover in August 2017 would also be higher than that of July 2017.
The report pointed out that the implementation of the Investors’ and Exporters’ Foreign Exchange (FX) window has increased the supply of foreign exchange into the Nigerian economy.
In addition, it has attracted more investments into Nigeria.
“Consequently, we observed relative stability in the foreign exchange market. Companies and individuals are now able to access more foreign exchange in the market than before to carry out eligible transactions and economic activities are gradually picking up,” they added.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) introduced the special window for investors, exporters and end-users of forex on April 21, 2017 as part of its efforts to deepen the forex market and accommodate all forex obligations.
According to the CBN, the objective of the window is to increase liquidity in the forex market and ensure timely execution and settlement of eligible transactions.
The eligible transactions in the window are: invisible transactions such as loan repayment, capital repatriation, management services fees, consultancy fees, software subscription, technology transfer agreements, personal home remittances and any other eligible invisible transactions.
Another one is the Bills for Collection as well as any other trade-related obligations (at the instance of the customers).

The CBN stipulates that the supply of foreign currency to the window shall be through portfolio investors, exporters, authorised dealers and other parties with foreign currency to exchange to naira.
The CBN is also a market participant in the window to promote liquidity and professional market conducts.
“The introduction of the window has encouraged exporters to bring back their export proceeds to the country and through the official sources, thus increasing the stock of foreign exchange in the country. “Another important gain of the window is that it has attracted more foreign capital into Nigeria for various forms of investment.
“Our analysis of the capital importation data from the CBN between January and May, 2017 shows that there was a growth in capital importation in 2017 compared with 2016.
“The total capital importation in the five months ended May 2017 stood at US$2.09 billion representing a growth of 82.78% compared with the US$1.42 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2016,” it added.
According to the report, Other Investments (OI) – Loans attracted the highest capital of US$886 million between January and May in 2017, followed by Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) – Equity of US$436 million and closely followed by Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI) – Equity of US$413 million.
The report also revealed that capital imported into Nigeria increased significantly from US$244 million in March to US$563 million in April 2017, following the commencement of the programme.
The increased supply of forex led to an appreciation in the value of the naira as in the parallel market, the value of the naira appreciated by 7.87 per cent from N396/US$ on April 25, 2017 to N367.50/US$ as at August 11, 2017.
At the I&E window, the naira gained 2.82% from N374.96/US$ on April 25, 2017 to N364.78/US$ as at August 11, 2017. In the inter-bank market it also gained 0.1 per cent from N305.9/US$ on April 25, 2017 to N305.65/US$ on August 11, 2017.
“Although we commend the initiative and note the gains the Nigerian economy recorded since its implementation, we believe that the gains could be short-lived in the absence of complementary measures that will improve the competitiveness of the Nigerian economy.
“There is the need for concerted efforts to improve physical and human infrastructure in order to increase local production to meet local consumption and boost exports to generate diversified foreign exchange earnings,” it stated.
CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, had told Arise TV that the I & E window was opened up for more and more people who are interested.
“That was why we introduced the I & E window. We said if you wanted forex, you can go to that market and buy it once it fits the pricing structure of the goods or whatever you want to do.
“And that has helped to some extent in complementing the flow of forex into the market and has resulted in the appreciation that we have seen. It is the market that determines the direction of the exchange rate,” he had said.

China's Online Court Heard Its First Case Yesterday

The judge, defendant and plaintiff all met via video chat.
The Hangzhou Internet Court, a new online court in China that will hear internet-related civil cases, had its first trial yesterday. It was a copyright infringement case was between a novelist and a web company that offered her novel to online subscribers without her permission and everyone met via video chat. The judge and both sets of legal agents connected through the web from different parts of the country and the whole thing took around 30 minutes to conclude.
The whole process from beginning to end is done through the internet. The judge presiding over the cases is stationed in a Hangzhou-based courtroom where members of the public can watch a projection of the video feed. A computer program transcribes the trial. Anyone wanting to submit a case can file all required petitions and necessary documents online where they can also pay any fees. Court notifications are delivered online and anyone without a computer can use terminals made available at the courthouse.
China isn't the only country looking into online hearings. Canada recently launched an online tribunal for small claims disputes and the UK just began an online court pilot program. "The internet court breaks geographic boundaries and greatly saves time in traditional hearings," said Wang Jiangqiao, the online court's vice president.

Michael Asemota Returns N150 million Wrongly Paid Into His Account In Qatar

A Nigerian expatriate in Qatar became a millionaire for several hours after a bank mistakenly deposited more than QR1.5 million ($411,127.99) into his account recently.
The man, Michael Asemota, had opened an account with a cheque of QR150,200 with an undisclosed commercial bank, where heis the sole signatory of the account.
As he got back home, he received an alert showing that a QR1,502,000 had been credited into his account by mistake instead of QR150,200. Asemota went back to the bank and returned the money.
Speaking to Qatar Tribune, Asemota said,
”After opening the account with the bank, I checked my balance to make withdrawals for a supply job and found the huge sum. I was amazed and decided to contact the bank.
I went to see the manager to report the error of QR1,502,000 deposited into my account. After checking for confirmation, the manager gave me a warm handshake in appreciation.” .
Asked why he alerted the bank about the error, Asemota said,
”I knew the money did not belong to me and shouldn’t be in my account in the first place, so there were no motives and temptations to keep it.”

Grace Mugabe Assaults Gabriella Engels, Model In Hotel With Her Two Sons

Zimbabwe's President Mugabe's wife, Grace Mugabe, has been accused of assaulting a 20-year-old South African model, Gabriella Engels, she found at a hotel in Sandton‚ Johannesburg‚ around 9pm on Sunday night visiting the Zimbabwean president’s two sons.
“We were chilling in a hotel room‚ and they were in the room next door‚” Engels said.
“She came in and started hitting us. The front of my forehead is busted open. I’m a model and I make my money based on my looks‚” she said.
According to Gabriella Engels who suffered gashes to her forehead and scalp, she was beaten with an extension chord alongside her two friends while the two sons ran away and the Mugabe bodyguards looked on.
“What is a girl compared to a woman beating you and 10+ bodyguards standing back‚ leaving her to do this sh*t‚” she tweeted about the incident.
However after she reported the incident to the Police on Sunday Night, she was shown away by the police officer on duty‚ who told her to first seek medical attention.

Gabriella’s mother‚ Debbie‚ said they were going to the police station to open an assault case on Monday.
“When she got home I was already sleeping. She was in so much shock‚ she couldn’t tell me what happened‚” Debbie said.
“I rushed her to the hospital to get stitches and when she eventually calmed down‚ she told me she was assaulted by Mugabe’s wife‚” she said.
Garnet Basson‚ CEO of The Capital hotel group‚ where the alleged assault took place‚ said there was an incident that prompted management to ask guests to leave the hotel, as Zimbabwean news had reported before now that Grace was in South Africa for treatment following a “freak accident” in which she injured her right ankle.
“What happened in the hotel room‚ I don’t have a comment on ... I can’t disclose the name. We did have guests removed from the premises due to a scenario where we thought it was not good for them to stay there.
“It was almost a forceful exit‚ but it wasn’t. It was a decent exit after about a half an hour of discussions.”

I am speechless

Types of robots by application

Nowadays, robots do a lot of different tasks in many fields and the number of jobs entrusted to robots is growing steadily. That's why in my opinion one of the best ways how to divide robots into types is a division by their application.
There are:

*Industrial robots - Industrial robots are robots used in an industrial manufacturing environment. Usually these are articulated arms specifically developed for such applications as welding, material handling, painting and others. If we judge purely by application this type could also include some automated guided vehicles and other robots.

*Domestic or household robots - Robots used at home. This type of robots includes many quite different devices such as robotic vacuum cleaners, robotic pool cleaners, sweepers, gutter cleaners and other robots that can do different chores. Also, some surveillance and telepresence robots could be regarded as household robots if used in that environment.

*Medical robots - Robots used in medicine and medical institutions. First and foremost - surgery robots. Also, some automated guided vehicles and maybe lifting aides.

*Service robots - Robots that don’t fall into other types by usage. These could be different data gathering robots, robots made to show off technologies, robots used for research, etc.

*Military robots - Robots used in military. This type of robots includes bomb disposal robots, different transportation robots, reconnaissance drones. Often robots initially created for military purposes can be used in law enforcement, search and rescue and other related fields.

*Entertainment robots - These are robots used for entertainment. This is a very broad category. It starts with toy robots such as robosapien or the running alarm clock and ends with real heavyweights such as articulated robot arms used as motion simulators.

*Space robots - I’d like to single out robots used in space as a separate type. This type would include robots used on the International Space Station, Canadarm that was used in Shuttles, as well as Mars rovers and other robots used in space.

*Hobby and competition robots - Robots that you create. Line followers, sumo-bots, robots made just for fun and robots made for competition.

Now, as you can see there are examples that fit into more than one of these types. For example, there can be a deep sea exploration robot that can gather some valuable information that can be used for military purposes.

Also, I have seen that a division into two types is used, accordingly - industrial and service robots. However, I can not see how a Mars exploration rover fits into one of these general types. Therefore I have used "service robots" in a narrower manner. In my version a term "service robots" serves as "others". This is basically a type where robots that don't fit into other types should fall in.

Types of robots by locomotion and kinematics

As you can understand, robot's application alone does not provide enough information when talking about a specific robot. For example an industrial robot - usually, when talking about industrial robots we think of stationary robots in a work cell that do a specific task. That's alright, but if there is an AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) in a factory? It’s also a robotic device working in an industrial environment. So, I propose to use both these classifications together.

So there are:

1. Stationary robots (including robotic arms with a global axis of movement)

1.1 Cartesian/Gantry robots

1.2 Cylindrical robots

1.3 Spherical robots

1.4 SCARA robots

1.5 Articulated robots (robotic arms)

1.6 Parallel robots

2. Wheeled robots

2.1 Single wheel (ball) robots

2.2 Two-wheel robots

2.3 Three and more wheel robots

3. Legged robots

3.1 Bipedal robots (humanoid robots)

3.2 Tripedal robots

3.3 quadrupedal robots

3.4 hexapod robots

3.5 other number of legs

4. Swimming robots

5. Flying robots

6. Mobile spherical robots (robotic balls)

7. Swarm robots

8. Others

Wondering about others? Yes, there are others. For example snake-like robots. There are many fields of research that deal with different innovative types of robots. Someday they will be very useful. However, by now I'll put them under the "others" type.

Of course, nothing of this is carved in stone, especially in robotics where everything changes almost monthly nowadays. Still, in my opinion these types of classification do their job well enough.

As you may have noticed, I use the classification by application as the main outline of this site. So if a certain type of robots interests you it’s possible to find more info about it on the left hand navigation menu if it’s there.

NIGERIA’S MANUFACTURING INVESTMENT HITS N3.7TRN IN 3 YEARS

Manufacturers in the country under the auspice of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) have disclosed that Nigeria’s cumulative manufacturing investment stood at N3.79 trillion in 2016. This is according to a survey conducted by MAN and made available to EYES OF LAGOS in Lagos.
It indicated that in the second half of 2016, manufacturing investment increased to N448.94 billion from N309.33 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2015, indicating N139.61 billion increases over the period. It also increased by N283.33 billion when compared with N165.61 billion recorded in the preceding period.
The association’s survey also indicated that manufacturing investment totaled N614.55 billion in 2016 as against N489.45 billion of 2015; depicting N125.1 billion increase over the period.
A breakdown of MAN’s findings showed that plant and machinery ranked highest with investment worth N189.84 billion; trailed by land and building worth N86.58 billion; assets under construction followed with investment worth N64.48 billion; motor vehicle was N58.05 billion; while furniture and equipment had investments worth N49.97 billion in the review period.

Besides, the sectoral group analysis showed that the highest proportion of total manufacturing investment in the period under review (38.0 per cent of N448.943 billion) went into the non-metallic mineral products group as investment in the sector surged to N170.81 billion from N1.15 billion of the corresponding periods of 2015; thereby indicating N169.66 billion increase over the period.
It also increased by N120.35 billion when compared with N50.46 billion of the preceding half. The survey also noted that investment in the sector totaled N221.27 billion in 2016 as against N18.82 billion total of 2015; translating to N202.45 billion increases over the period.
In addition, data generated from MAN survey also showed that 69.9 per cent of total manufacturing investment in the review period, which stood at N448.94 billion, went to Ogun; thus retaining the zone as the investment haven of the nation.
Breakdown revealed that investment in Ogun increased to N313.62 billion in the review period from N302.26 billion of the corresponding half of 2015; indicating N11.36 billion increase over the period. It also increased by N259.07 billion when compared with N54.55 billion recorded in the preceding half.
However, investment in the zones totaled N368.16 billion in 2016 as against N430.55 billion recorded in the 2015; depicting N62.39 billion decline over the period. Meanwhile, the association has also disclosed that its members suffered limited availability of borrowable funds and also high interest rate in the second half of 2016, which consequently affected their cost of goods produced in the country.
Particularly, a survey conducted by MAN showed that average cost of borrowing from the commercial banks increased to 23.3 per cent from 21.9 per cent recorded in the corresponding half of 2015; translating to 1.4 per centage point decline over the period.
In addition, it also declined by 1.9 per centage point when compared with 21.4 per cent recorded in the preceding half. According to the association, “high cost of borrowing was consistent across sectoral groups and industrial zones and was a major challenge to manufacturing in the period under review.”

Explicit video of woman getting felt up by a group of men goes viral and people are asking if it's sexual assault

A very vulgar video shot at the Caribana music festival in Toronto has gone viral and it shows a woman getting touched inappropriately by a group of men. The video got mixed reactions with some people saying she was "taken advantage of" by the men while others think she was a willing participant.

The video is being circulated under the hashtag #ThotVideo. Mark Zuckerberg aims for YouTube's audience by launching a new video service on Facebook called 'Watch'

Everyone in the tech industry and beyond knows that Mark Zuckerberg is not here to play and he has just proved it yet again by announcing the launch of a new video platform called "Watch" that will feature live and recorded show episodes which clearly strays into YouTube's territory.

The new service will feature some live events that Facebook has acquired streaming rights for, including a weekly Major League Baseball game. Other shows will be produced by video partners including National Geographic, Time Inc., NASA and the NBA.

The shows that have been announced suggest that Facebook is primarily taking its cues from YouTube. A blog post about the new Facebook service stressed that it is organized around "friends and communities.

Users will be able to personalize their feeds and follow shows they like, much like YouTube's channel subscription model. They will also be able to comment in real time, and a tab will show what their friends are watching.

Facebook will initially make the platform available on its desktop and app versions to a "limited group of people" in the United States, before rolling it out globally.

BREAKING: Court orders forfeiture of N7.64bn Diezani loot to FG

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Wednesday ordered the interim forfeiture of the sum of N7,646,700,000 allegedly kept in Sterling Bank Plc by former Petroleum Resources Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, told Justice Chuka Obiozor-led court via an ex parte application that the N7.6bn was part of the sum of $153,310,000 which Diezani allegedly siphoned from the coffers of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation sometime in 2014.

The Commission also alleged that the former Petroleum Minister stashed the money in three Nigerian banks.

However, the Federal Government had since February 2016, through an order granted by another judge, Justice Muslim Hassan also of the Federal High Court, taken possession of part of the money from the other banks.

The anti-graft agency told the court that the Federal Government had recovered N23.4bn, $5m and another N9.08bn out of the $153.3m.

It, therefore, prayed the court to order Sterling Bank to deliver up to the Federal Government the N7.6bn still in its custody.

Justice Obiozor granted the order and directed the commission to cause it to be published

The judge then adjourned till August 28, 2017 for Sterling Bank and any other interested party to appear before the court to know why the funds should not be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government.
